Dealing with Exceptions in a Structured Process Environment

In 2011 LOLC insurance approached SP to use eDGEVANTAGE to build a workflow to manage their motor claims process. Since this was right up our street we started work on gathering the requirement, then designed and implemented a wiorkflow based solution for LOLC.

LOLC went live with the solution, and used the solution for a couple of years until 2 things happened.

  • The forecasted transaction rate grew exponentially – rendering the system unabel to cope with the load.
  • The huge number of exceptions accepted by the company as part of its business offering started making the process seem too rigid

LOLC are now looking for another vendor to manage their claims process. However loosing a customer and a hard won account is not something we at SP take lying down.

We therefore started looking at how we could overcome the two problems stated above. The first problem was easily addressed through using our next higher product version, which gave us more than double the capacity. We are now 3 versions ahead in terms of product iterations and capacity is no longer an issue.

The 2nd issue was a more serious challenge – where we had to find a means of giving the customer the control of the workflow and yet the ability to jump between different parts of the proces on an adhoc basis. As an example – The claim was initiated and the onsite assement option selected vs a garage inspection. The assessor was sent to the accident site. But they also want to have a garage inspection which becomes a problem unless it was defined as an option.

Thus was born Micro-flows, and while it was too late to save our engagement with LOLC – It has given us exciting new prospects for future development and future engagements and disrupting how businesses work!
